Fashion Through the Ages

From lace to leather, linen to lycra, and everything in between, the Fashion Through the Ages exhibition at The Gordon Gallery showcases a collection of lovingly preserved garments dating back to the late 1800s along with photos, storyboards, video and historical details.

Fashion through the Ages is the third in a series of exhibitions celebrating The Gordon’s 125th year in Geelong. The Fashion department curated the exhibition and 125 Event Coordinator, Liz Grant, says she was inundated with treasured clothing offered on loan from the community. Many of these prized pieces are featured in the exhibition, along with items unearthed from The Gordon’s fashion archive.

“The art of fashion design has a long history in Geelong, dating back to the turn of the century, when all clothing was handmade and dressmaking classes commenced at The Gordon in 1895,” she said. “This exhibition incorporates a range of mediums besides the garments themselves, to paint a picture of what was happening in the world, in society, and in women’s fashion through each era.”

The exhibition closes this Friday so there are only a few days left to take a trip down memory lane and enjoy a nostalgic look at Geelong fashion. Check out the slide show of photos from the exhibition.

Fashion Through the Ages, 6 – 28 September 2012, Geelong Gallery (opposite Geelong Station). Monday – Friday, 10am – 4pm.
